Boating Collisions

Boating collisions can cause serious injuries

Boating collisions in the Pacific Northwest are unfortunately a fact of life for our residents. If you live in Western Washington, you know that living life on the lakes and Puget Sound is a top priority for fun and relaxation for most of us. Whether it’s joining the log boom at Seafair, traveling the San Juan’s or river fishing on the Snohomish or Columbia River, our vast selection of watering holes means more boats, more fishing, more swimming and sadly more collisions.

Any physical injury that occurs on a ship, boat, ferry, wave runner or jet ski is counted as a boating collision. Serious injuries and even death ranging in the thousands occur annually in the United States as a result of negligent, reckless, inexperience or under the influence (BUI) handling of boats and water crafts. Washington State boat owners and operators are obligated to keep occupants safe; however injuries and collisions often happen and are directly caused by the carelessness and negligence of these parties.

Common causes of boating collisions

  • Recreational activities – Recreations and sports like water skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, etc. can become dangerous if the participants neglect to follow the rules of the water and safety procedures or fail to consider the surrounding environment, water depth, other boats and other dangers.
  • Crashing with other boats, flooding or capsizing – These can be caused by direct or indirect operator negligence; boating while influenced by alcohol, lacking boating skills or natural factors such as wind, rain, sun or waves.
  • Electrocution – This can happen due to a lighting strike, striking a power line or malfunctioning boat electronics. Lightning strikes are also very dangerous and are a good reason to avoid boating when there is a possibility of storm.
  • Fire or explosion – Fuel is the reason for most boating fires. Fires and explosions can be caused by improper maintenance of or damage to the boat’s fuel system or engine.
